The Nigeria-Biafra War
remains a significant memory in the history of Nigeria and, since its establishment, the Centre for
Memories commemorates the commencement of the war on May 30 every year.
In keeping with this
tradition, CFM will mark the 53rd anniversary on Saturday, May 30, 2020 which comes at a time the
country and indeed the whole world is fighting a different kind of war against an invisible enemy –
In memorializing the Nigeria-Biafra War, CFM celebrates and honours the efforts of the many
gallant men and women who played various roles before, during and after the war. It also helps
us to learn from the past to build for the future, which is so much in line with the Centre’s
mandate to recall useful memories in building a sustainable future.
It is in recognition of this mandate that CFM’s 2020 commemoration of the commencement of the
war will focus on leveraging experiences in mobilizing community efforts in the defunct Republic
of Biafra to win the war on the COVID-19 pandemic. It is expected that this memorial event
reawakens the Igbo spirit of community, collaboration, unity, and resilience to win the pandemic
